(It is the bounden duty of everyone to defend the nation from enemies. One should not run away from the battlefield. Only then will the valiant wear the garland of victory. This lesson inspires the children to be prepared to sacrifice their life for the nation.)

It was an evening of 1965. There was an atmosphere of peace all around. There was no tension of any kind. At this time a neighbouring country invaded India. This unexpected attack surprised the Indian army. The soldiers who had gone on leave were ordered to report to duty without any delay.

A soldier of Major rank, who was spending his holidays at home, made preparations to depart as soon as he learned about the attack. He touched his mother’s feet and sought her blessings. The mother shed tears and embraced him. The son was overcome with strong emotions but he restrained himself when he remembered his motherland. She placed her hand on his head and said, “Son, defending the nation is the greatest duty of every Indian. Go and perform your duty. But remember – ‘Indian tradition is to face the enemies and take the bullets fired by them on the chest and not to run away from them and take the bullets in the back”.

The war was spreading in a grave manner. The frontier at the Ichogil canal was a challenge to the Indian army. The question was who would take the responsibility of breaking this wall. It was not an easy task. It was a direct fight with death. But the valiant never fear death. Immediately a brave man accepted this responsibility. He was the same Major who had come from the village.

The Major moved cautiously. The sound of firing from the enemy side was deafening. The Major was full of patriotic feelings. There was hardly any time to wait for the right opportunity. Therefore he fired at the tanks of the enemies and moved ahead. In the meanwhile, many bullets entered the body of the Major. But the words of his mother continued to inspire him. Ignoring the injuries he moved forward but the bullets continued to enter his body.

The higher authorities understood the situation and he was ordered to retreat. But the Major ignored it. After destroying all the tanks of the enemy the victorious Major fell. The Major was taken to the Military Hospital at Amritsar. By that time his whole chest was filled with bullets. The higher officers inquired with him if he had any last wish. The bullets in the chest were causing extreme pain but the Major said with a smile – “Yes, send the message to my mother that her son received bullets on the chest and not in the back.”

Do you know who this brave man was? He was Major Asharam Tyagi who fulfilled his mother’s words and gave up his life to defend his motherland. The lamp is extinguished but its light will continue to show the path to patriots.
