The Indian scientific heritage is very distinctive. Right from Vedic days, our ancient personalities have achieved remarkable success in their research works. Astronomy was well known to Indians from Vedic period. Thythiriya Samhita says that sun is the centre object of the solar system “The sun holds the earth and the celestial region“ (मित्रो…) and “The sun is the attracting power of all heavenly bodies.” (मित्र कृष्टी:) Thyttiriya Aranyaka says about sun like this “The world is due to the sun god. The living beings get their strength and energy from him” (येनेमा जतम).

About the moon Thyttariya Samhita and Mahabharatha say like this — “The moon is the satellite of the earth, revolves around its mother planet and follows it in its revolution around the self-luminous father planet (the sun). The lunar month is divided into two groups, called Pakshas, one when the moon is waning is called as a dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha and when the moon is waxing it is called as a bright fortnight or Shukla paksha. Indian scientific heritage is very distinctive. Right from Vedic days, our ancient personalities have achieved remarkable success in their research works. Astronomy was well known to Indians from the Vedic period. Thythiriya Samhita says that sun is the centre object of the solar system “The sun holds the earth and the celestial region” (मित्रो…) and “The sun is the attracting power of all heavenly bodies.” (मित्र कृष्टी:) Thyttiriya Aranyaka says about the sun like this “The world is due to the sun god. (आयं गौ। …… जन्म। ….. शरीरणः)

Among such Indian scientific personalities Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Varahamihira etc became very popular. In their books, we find information on the movement of the planets, latitudes, longitudes, astronomy, lightning, rain, clouds, earthquake, meteor(shooting star) etc. In the field of mathematics, our ancient personalities invented the numbers including the concept of zero. Large and small numbers, square and cube roots, the value of Pi etc are invented by Aryabhata (A.D.476) and Bhaskaracharya (12th century A.D). Pythagoras theorem was known to Indians one thousand years before Pythagoras. This theorem had its origin in the sulbasutra of Bodhayana and Katyayana. Nagarjuna (2nd century A.D) described the metals (लोह) and alloys in his book रसरत्नाकर.

Speed of light described in Rik-Samhitha like this “It is remembered that the sunlight travels 2202 yojanas in half a nimisha”. A celebrated saint Sayanacharya comments on the above text. Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Astangasangraha, Bhavaprakasha are important works in the field of medicine. Pathology, blood flows, surgery etc are described in these books. A book by name Naadidarpana says about the disease like this “Experts know the health or disease of the body through testing the life-indicating pulse (Nadi) below the root of the thumb.
